Daktarin oral gel contains the antifungal medication, miconazole 2% and is used to treat fungal infections of the tongue, mouth, and throat.
Miconazole weakens the fungal cell wall membrane causing the cell contents to leak out thereby killing the fungus.
Daktarin oral gel should be placed on the tongue and kept in the mouth and swished about for as long as reasonably possible before swallowing. Doses are given after meals and at bedtime and are usually continued for a week after symptoms have abated to prevent reinfection. The dose to be taken depends on the age of the patient.
Daktarin may also be applied to dentures when a fungal infection is present.
