Atrovent Inhaler 20mcg contains the anticholinergic bronchodilator medication, ipratropium bromide. Ipratropium is long-acting anticholinergic that prevents airway spasm causing the bronchi to relax and open, making it easier to breathe. When used in inhalable form, very little ipratropium is absorbed into the blood stream reducing side-effects.
Atrovent is used to treat asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a progressive disease that gets worse with time. Although Atrovent begins to work quickly after inhalation, it may take up to two hours for the patient to receive maximum benefit.
