Caverject injection contains the active ingredient, alprostadil 20mcg that is used to treat impotence also known as erectile dysfunction. Alprostadil belongs to a class of chemicals known as prostaglandins and its action in the penis is to cause an increased blood flow sufficient to achieve and maintain an erection.
After preparing and injecting a dose of Caverject an erection is usually achieved in 5-20 minutes time. Caverject should not be used more than once in a 24-hour period and not greater than three times per week.
Because there is a need to inject Caverject it is not usually the first-choice treatment for erectile dysfunction.
