Efudix cream contains the active ingredient, fluorouracil 5% is a chemotherapeutic agent used to treat minor pre-malignant and malignant skin lesions. Deep penetrating skin malignancies usually do not respond well to treatment with Efudix and alternative treatment will be required.
Solar keratosis also known as actinic keratosis is a premalignant skin lesion that may develop into skin cancer if not treated with Efudix. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a common type of skin cancer that can develop from solar keratosis, that responds well to treatment with Efudix cream.
Efudix cream is applied in a thin layer to the affected skin lesion once or twice daily. An occlusive dressing is not essential for pre-malignant conditions but where practical a dressing should also be applied to malignant lesions.
