Daktarin cream contains the antifungal medication, miconazole 2% and is used to treat tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot.
Miconazole weakens the fungal cell wall membrane causing the cell contents to leak out thereby killing the fungus. While typically considered a first-line treatment for athlete’s foot, a fungal infection between the toes, miconazole has other uses and is effective against other fungal infections such as ring worm, thrush or pityriasis versicolor.
Hands should be washed both before and after a twice daily application of Daktarin cream and gently massaged into the affected area. Treatment should continue for 10 days after symptoms appear to have abated to prevent reinfection.
