Scopoderm TTS patches contain scopolamine 1.5mg and are used to relieve the unpleasant symptoms of motion sickness.
Motion sickness is thought to be caused by the brain receiving conflicting signals from the eye and the ear. The vestibular system of the ear suggests motion while the signals from the eye suggest stillness which causes the brain to wrongly infer that a toxin has been ingested which in turn triggers the vomiting reflex.
Scopolamine in Scopoderm patches blocks this signalling cascade and the vomiting reflex is suppressed.
A single Scopoderm patch is placed behind one ear only around five hours before an intended journey and will provide protection against motion sickness for 3 days.
