Minirin tablets contain desmopressin 0.2mg, a synthetic version of anti-diuretic hormone (Vasopressin) and are used to treat conditions where excess urine is produced (Polyuria).
Diabetes insipidus (DI) is a condition where the body does not product sufficient anti-diuretic hormone which results in excessive urination and extreme thirstiness. Usually, diabetes insipidus arises as a result of damage to the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus due to infection such as meningitis, or head trauma.
By providing a potent analogue of vasopressin, the anti-diuretic hormone, excessive urine production is bought back to normal and symptoms are relieved.
The dosage is usually one tablet taken three times daily, but the prescription may change according to responsiveness to treatment.
