Aldactone tablets contain spironolactone 50mg, a potassium sparing diuretic used to treat oedema and conditions where there is a hormonal imbalance of aldosterone and low potassium blood levels.
High blood pressure, congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis and kidney disease can all lead to the fluid retention and swelling, a symptom known as oedema. Aldactone tablets act to increase water excretion in the urine to reduce oedema, without lowering potassium levels.
Aldactone also has anti-androgen properties and is used in female hirsutism to reduce facial and body hair. Male-to-female transsexuals may also be prescribed Aldactone to assist in the development of female sexual characteristics.
