Nexium tablets contain the proton pump inhibitor, esomeprazole 20mg and are used to treat symptoms of gastric reflux and to help heal gastric ulcers.
Esomeprazole works by reducing the quantity of gastric acid produced in the stomach. Nexium helps prevent gastric acid refluxing into the oesophagus where it can cause damage. This same action is useful in treating gastric or duodenal ulcers.
Peptic ulcers are associated with the bacteria, Helicobacter pylori and Nexium along with two antibiotics help to remove this microorganism and allow the healing of the ulcer.
Nexium is considered to provide greater stomach acid control than omeprazole.
