Losec capsules contain the proton pump inhibitor, omeprazole 40mg and are used to treat symptoms of gastric reflux and to help heal gastric ulcers.
Omeprazole works by reducing the quantity of gastric acid produced in the stomach. Losec helps prevent gastric acid refluxing into the oesophagus where it can cause damage. This same action is useful in treating gastric or duodenal ulcers.
Peptic ulcers are associated with the bacteria, Helicobacter pylori and Losec along with two antibiotics help to remove this microorganism and allow the healing of the ulcer.
Losec is also used to treat a condition where the stomach produces excessive acid called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
