Carafate tablets contain the active ingredient, sucralfate 1000mg (1g), a cytoprotectant medication used to treat and prevent recurrence of non-malignant gastric and duodenal peptic ulcers.
Carafate works by producing a substance that adheres to the site of the ulcer, protecting it from further damage caused by stomach acid and digestive enzymes. Carafate is not an antacid medication.
The usual dose of Carafate is one tablet taken an hour before meals and one tablet at bedtime. Treatment may take up to eight weeks to heal an ulcer and if deemed necessary, treatment may be continued on a maintenance basis at a lower dosage.
